Primary School

If the child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. Ignacio Estrada

Primary Curriculum
Primary Curriculum
We follow the Primary Key Stage 1 and 2 UK National Curriculum. The curriculum sets a clear statutory entitlement to learning for all children which is both inclusive and challenging. Our teachers plan a range of current and relevant topics carefully matched to meet the requirements of the UK National Curriculum. Emphasis is placed on developing creativity, problem solving and physical development to support the development of the whole child. To enrich students’ learning, we engage in innovative collaboration in English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Computing, Physical Education (PE), Music and Life Skills. We aim to develop our students to be independent learners who are stimulated to be curious and ask questions.
Key Stage 1 & Lower Key Stage 2
Key Stage 1 & Lower Key Stage 2
Our Key Stage 1 curriculum builds on skills and the knowledge acquired in the Early Years Foundation Stage. To support our Key Stage 1 curriculum, we have developed a systematic phonics approach that teaches students a comprehensive set of letter-sound relationships. Students in Grade 1 & 2 have a daily phonics lesson, the school also continues to provide catch-up phonics lessons to students in Grade 3.

Lower Key Stage 2 (Grades 3 -6)
Lower Key Stage 2 (Grades 3 -6)
The lower Key Stage 2 curriculum offers a variety of ways for students to express their creativity. Our highly qualified teachers focus on developing students independent learning skills and creating a nurturing and supportive environment that allows students to learn more about themselves and others. From Grade 3 to Grade 6 we have specialist teachers who ensure our students get the best provision possible in PE, Art, ICT, Music and French.

Reading Scheme
Reading Scheme
At Al Shomoukh International School we follow the Oxford Reading Tree program to teach reading and to ensure our students become confident readers. The reading program introduces reading challenges in Grade 2 to enrich children’s vocabulary and reading range. Guided reading is introduced in Grade 1 and is integrated into the curriculum, students have a daily guided reading session. The Oxford Reading Tree book bands indicate the reading level for each reading book and are used across different schemes.
